A coarser, thicker, variety of Persian carpet, the Gabbeh (from the Persian word meaning raw, natural or uncut) is a primitive, rough carpet. Traditionally made by woman and used as sleeping rugs, these beautiful, medium-sized hand-woven pile rugs feature simple, abstract designs with playful geometry and open fields of colour. They are the best known nomadic carpets from Iran, knotted by nomads from the Qashqai and Luri tribes of southwest Iran and famous for their naive, primitive patterns that are inspired by their natural surroundings. The eye-catching and unique Loribaft is similar to Gabbeh carpets, but more tightly knotted with a shorter pile. These carpets are made to last, with high quality, hand-spun, naturally dyed wool. Today, high quality versions are also made in Pakistan and India, influenced by the Persian varieties. While the warp in Persian carpets is usually wool, these Indian and Pakistan varieties use cotton, with silk details.
