The kilim is an ancient rug. Resembling the first carpets in history that date back several hundred years before Christ, these roots of the kilim can be traced back to the nomadic peoples of the Middle East. These rugs were used as blankets, seat mats, saddle blankets, wall decoration, carpets and prayer mats. Hand-woven and very different from the more modern knotted carpet, the 'flatweave' kilim is almost identical top and bottom, making both sides of the carpet usable. Warp and weft weaving results in distinctive geometric and linear patterns and small spaces when the fibres are pulled apart. ('Kilim' comes from the Persian word 'gel?m' (????), which means 'to spread roughly'.) The typically strong colours are extracted from plants and minerals, making the original kilims from the Middle East 100% natural. Todays kilims are purely decorative or functional as prayer rugs.
